The Trinity- What is it?
In God he is 3 persons, one called the Father, one the Son, and the other the Holy Spirit. They are all God but united in deeply mysterious and intimate way that there is only one God. This is called the Trinity.
'He is one God, in 3 persons- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit'
2 Corinthians 13:14 Paul prays " May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all" describing the 3 people within the one God.
God the Father
In the Bible the uses of the word Father is more a indication of His role over His gender, for God is neither male or female. He is God. As we read the Bible its clear that God wants us to know him as our Father. For in John 17:1 - After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you." Jesus refers to God as Father.
As our Father, God is relational, loving and faithful- indeed he defines what fatherhood ought to be. God loves us for we are all his children. For this reason, Jesus taught the disciples and us to pray "Our Father who in heaven ( Matthew 6:9 ), for when we put God first we can rest assured in him.
God the Son
God the Son refers to Jesus who is the Son of God. Jesus was born by the virgin Mary making his entry to the world human but retaining his divine nature. Jesus' ident was confirmed in Luke 3:22 whilst he was baptised in the Jordan River when a voice came form heaven, saying ' You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am pleased.
On more than one occasion Jesus he proved his power. He healed those who were paralysed, sick with various diseases, raised people from the dead. He also was able to forgive their sins ( Luke 5:17 -26 ). It was thought that God could only do this. Jesus was God in human form.
Holy Spirit
Some people think the Holy Spirit is a impersonal 'force' but he's not. he's a divine person. Referring to himself as 'I' and undertakes actions himself ( Acts 10:19 ). He is called the Spirit of God ( Genesis 1:2, Romans 8:9) and does things only God can do. We first encounter the Spirit hovering over the waters' ( Genesis 1:2). He also give people the words they need to say at certain moments in time ( 1 Samuel 10:10 ).
We also see the Holy Spirit in Ezekiel 36:25-27 when God promise to help people love and serve Him with all their hearts by putting his Spirit within them. We see the power of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:4 when ' all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
The primary work of the Spirit is to unite believers spiritually with Jesus.
In Summary
The Trinity is God in 3 persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
